The Hidden Cost of Free Church Tech

Free is a compelling price. When a church is operating on a tight budget, the idea of getting a website, an app, or a communication tool for nothing sounds like good stewardship. And sometimes free tools are genuinely the right choice.

But free church tech usually comes with costs that are not listed on the pricing page.

The cost of your time

The most common tradeoff with free tools is time. Free website builders like Wix or Squarespace can produce a functioning site, but they require someone to actually build and maintain it. That someone is usually a volunteer who agreed to help with the website and now owns it indefinitely.

When that volunteer moves away, gets busy, or simply burns out, the website stops getting updated. Service times go stale. Events from last year stay on the calendar. The site becomes a liability instead of an asset.

Time spent wrestling with a free platform is time not spent on ministry. That cost is real even if it does not show up in a budget line.

The cost of looking unprofessional

Free website builders are built around templates. Templates that thousands of other organizations are also using. A church website built on a free template looks like a church website built on a free template.

First impressions matter. A visitor who lands on a site that looks generic and dated draws a conclusion about the church before they ever read a word. That conclusion may be unfair, but it is the one they draw.

The cost of platform dependency

Free tools have a habit of changing their pricing. A tool that is free today often introduces a paid tier for the features you actually need, or raises prices after you have built your whole operation around it. Churches that have migrated from one free platform to another know exactly how disruptive that is.

Building on a platform you own, or working with someone who builds you something you control, means you are not subject to someone else's pricing decisions.

What good stewardship actually looks like

Good stewardship is not always choosing the cheapest option. It is choosing the option that serves your congregation well over time without creating hidden costs or dependencies.

A well-built church website that costs $1,500 and requires no ongoing maintenance is better stewardship than a free site that requires ten hours a month to keep current.

We build church websites, apps, and communication tools at prices sized for church budgets. If you are tired of the hidden costs of free tools, we are happy to talk about what a cleaner, more sustainable approach would look like for your congregation.
